AI courses in Sri Lanka come in four types, and the published fees run from LKR 45,100 for a forty-hour evening certificate to LKR 1,425,000 for a two-year MSc, with international platforms in between at about US$160 a year. For an owner, the right AI course is a short session that ends with one workflow written down; for an engineer, it is a programme that changes how they work with a coding agent; for a student, a university degree is still the thing that earns the interview.
Picture an operations manager at a fifty-person logistics firm in Colombo 2. She has eleven browser tabs open, every one of them an AI course, and a budget approval due on Friday for LKR 250,000. Her chairman has asked what the company is doing about AI. Nothing on her screen answers that question, because the tabs are all answering a different one.

What people search for is not what they need
The demand is genuine and it is measurable. The World Bank’s South Asia Development Update of October 2025 found that 7.3 percent of white-collar job listings in Sri Lanka in 2025 required AI expertise, the highest share in the region and ahead of India’s 5.8 percent. Across South Asia, AI-related postings more than doubled between January 2023 and March 2025, from 2.9 to 6.5 percent of all listings, growing 75 percent faster than non-AI listings, and jobs asking for AI skills carried a 28 percent wage premium against 12 percent for general digital skills.
The search terms show the split. Someone typing “ai course colombo” usually wants a classroom they can reach after work, while someone typing “ai for business course sri lanka” is an owner who has no intention of writing code.
So a person searching for a course is being rational. A company searching for one often is not, because the company is trying to buy a change in behaviour and courses do not reliably deliver one. The uncomfortable number is completion. Research summarised in the journal Open Praxis in 2024 reports that in the edX data behind Reich and Ruipérez-Valiente’s 2019 study in Science, 52 percent of people who registered for a course never started it, and that across 221 courses analysed by Jordan the median completion rate was 12.6 percent.
Read those two facts together. A rising share of jobs wants AI skills, and roughly one learner in eight finishes what they signed up for. The question that matters on Friday is which of your people will be different on Monday, and at what.

The Sri Lankan fees come from the institutions’ own pages, so SLIIT’s MSc in Artificial Intelligence tells you LKR 600,000 before you contact anybody, while the University of Moratuwa publishes the structure and entry requirements but not the fee. Platform prices move: Coursera Plus showed US$160 a year on the day we checked and that page often carries a discount, so read it on the day you buy.
The last column is the one to read first. Three of the four types are excellent at what they were designed for, which is teaching you a subject. None of them is designed to change what happens in your office on Monday, and that is what your chairman asked about.
For owners: the one-day format, and why one day is enough
An owner or an operations manager does not need to know how a transformer works. They need to know which task in their business is safe to hand to a machine, which is not, and who signs off the output before it reaches a customer. That is a management skill, and it fits in a day.

For engineers: a spec-first development course, not another model course
Engineers have a different problem. Most of them can already prompt a coding agent. What they cannot do reliably is decide what the agent should build, review what came back, and keep a team of six people producing one coherent system rather than six divergent ones.
Our spec-first programme is application-gated for that reason. When training beats hiring, and when it does not
Here is the test we use on a first call, and it takes about two minutes.
If the constraint is judgement, train. Your people know the business, the work is not overwhelming in volume, and what is missing is the confidence to say which task may be automated and which must not. A day, or two weekends for the engineers, fixes that far more cheaply than any monthly salary.
If the constraint is volume that arrives when nobody is at a desk, do not train. No course adds a person to answer WhatsApp at eleven at night. If you cannot tell which constraint you have, count first. What to do this week
Three things, in order. Close ten of the eleven tabs and write down, in one sentence, what should be different in your company in ninety days, because the sentence decides the type of course and the type decides the shortlist. Then pick the one person whose behaviour has to change and ask them to finish a free course this week, the ten-hour Google one will do, since a person who does not finish ten free hours will not finish a two-year MSc. Then, if the sentence you wrote is about a workflow rather than a qualification, book the day, not the degree.

Do I need to code to learn AI for my business?
No, and for an owner the coding is the least useful part. What you need is the ability to write down one workflow in enough detail that someone could staff it, name the person who approves anything that reaches a customer, and recognise the tasks where a wrong answer is expensive, which is a management skill rather than a technical one.
What is spec-first development training?
