AI engineer salary in Sri Lanka in 2026, and what it costs to hire one

AI engineer salary in Sri Lanka in 2026: senior roles advertise at LKR 400,000 to 600,000 a month, and the real cost is about 1.4 times that. Five routes.

An AI engineer salary in Sri Lanka in 2026 runs from about LKR 185,000 a month, PayScale’s senior software engineer average from 113 profiles, to the LKR 400,000 to 600,000 a month (US$1,217 to US$1,825) that senior AI roles in Colombo advertise at on the job boards. Whichever end you land on, budget about 1.4 times it, because the Employees’ Provident Fund adds 12% from the employer and the Employees’ Trust Fund another 3%, before recruitment or the three months a new engineer spends learning your systems.

Picture a CTO in Colombo 2 with two things on the desk. On the left, a resignation letter from the one person who understood the retrieval pipeline, leaving for a remote contract paid in dollars. On the right, forty-one applications for the replacement, of which perhaps four have shipped anything with a model in production. She has a headcount budget in rupees and a market priced in somebody else’s currency. Her question was not what the salary is. It was what it buys.

Every US dollar figure below converts at LKR 328.75, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s indicative USD/LKR spot rate for 10 September 2026. This is commercial information, not financial advice.

What the job boards actually say, and what they refuse to say

We spent a morning reading listings rather than aggregator articles. The most useful finding was an absence.

On 10 September 2026 the ITPro.lk jobs board carried 50 live listings. Five were AI, machine learning or data roles: two internships, a senior data engineer, an AI and ML engineer, and one advertisement running an AI engineer and a senior AI engineer post together. Not one of the 50 published a salary. The IT section of topjobs.lk was the same that morning: data analyst, data engineer and AI solution engineer roles in Colombo, Malabe and Ekala, money left off every one.

That is why so many salary articles about Sri Lanka are guesswork dressed as data. The job boards, read in aggregate, put senior AI engineers in Colombo at roughly LKR 400,000 to LKR 600,000 a month, US$1,217 to US$1,825, and freelancers at US$15 to US$40 an hour.

Search for “machine learning engineer salary Sri Lanka” and the surveys turn out thinner than they look. PayScale’s senior software engineer page for Sri Lanka gives LKR 2,218,378 a year from 113 reported profiles, updated 20 May 2026, about LKR 184,865 a month or US$562. Its general software engineer page gives LKR 1,026,706 from 327 profiles. Then the specialist pages. Machine learning engineer: 11 profiles, an average of LKR 122,084 a year, a stated range running from LKR 25 to LKR 1 million. Data scientist: 34 profiles, LKR 250,001, spread from LKR 10,000 to LKR 3 million.

We will not print those two as a salary band, because they are not one. They are a sample size problem, and the specialist pool here is small enough that the world’s largest salary aggregator cannot fill a survey from it.

The costs that sit on top of the salary line

Here is the arithmetic, on a LKR 500,000 a month base, the midpoint of the advertised senior band.

  • Base salary: LKR 500,000 a month, US$1,521
  • EPF, employer minimum of 12% of monthly gross earnings: LKR 60,000
  • ETF, 3% of total monthly earnings, paid by the employer: LKR 15,000
  • Statutory subtotal: LKR 575,000 a month, 1.15 times base

Those two rates are set, not estimated. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka administers the EPF and requires the 12% employer minimum; the Employees’ Trust Fund Board takes its 3% on top, and it is never deducted from the employee.

The next two lines are our arithmetic, not anybody’s published figure, and you should substitute your own. We plan recruitment at one month’s salary spread across year one, LKR 41,667 a month, and the first three months at half productive output, LKR 750,000 across the year or LKR 62,500 a month. Add those and the year-one cost is LKR 679,167 a month, about US$2,066, or 1.36 times base. That is where our rule of thumb of roughly 1.4 times comes from: a planning multiplier, not a market statistic.

Time to hire is the figure we could not source. No Sri Lankan recruiter or industry body publishes one we could verify, so we will not invent it. What the boards show is that senior AI roles stay listed while junior and internship posts turn over.

Five ways to get the work done, priced side by side

RouteMonthly cost, LKRMonthly cost, US$Time to startWhat you own at the end
Junior in-house hire (general software engineer average)About 116,000, at 1.36 times PayScale’s software engineer averageAbout 353No published local figure; add the notice periodThe person, the code, what they learned on your systems
Senior in-house hire544,000 to 816,000, at 1.36 times the advertised band1,655 to 2,482No published figure; these posts stay listed longestThe same, plus a candidate every other employer is bidding for
Freelancer394,500 to 1,052,000, at 80 hours a month, our assumption1,200 to 3,200DaysThe hours you booked and whatever was handed over
Offshore development shopAbout 3,356,000, on Clutch’s global project averageAbout 10,209Weeks, after scopingA delivered build; support quoted separately
Embedded AI engineer from specshop.dev986,250 to 1,643,7503,000 to 5,000Day one; first fortnight is mappingThe code, the specs behind it, a team that can maintain both

Two rows carry warnings. The freelance row multiplies a published hourly band by 80 hours, our assumption about a half-time engagement, not a market fact: the large freelance platforms publish no Sri Lanka band we could open and check, and the one Sri Lankan machine learning profile we could read on Freelancer.com advertised US$25 an hour. The offshore row uses Clutch’s global average monthly project cost of US$10,209.39, since Clutch publishes no Sri Lankan equivalent. More in what AI automation costs in Sri Lanka.

Why senior AI engineers are scarce here

The scarcity is not mysterious, and it is not really about AI.

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment recorded 144,379 departures for foreign employment in the first six months of 2025. That covers every occupation, most of it far from software, so treat it as weather rather than evidence about engineers. But it is the weather your offer letter competes in, and a senior engineer reading a remote advertisement priced in dollars is not comparing your salary against the local band.

Underneath is a supply problem the PayScale samples expose. There are 327 software engineers and 113 senior software engineers in Sri Lanka willing to report a salary, and eleven machine learning engineers. The country has a deep bench of good software engineers and a shallow one of people who have taken a model into production, held it there, and learned what it does at three in the morning. Most of that second group were not hired as AI engineers. They were software engineers given a hard problem and eighteen months.

Which is what the CTO with the resignation letter needed to hear. The person who left was not irreplaceable because of a title, but because of the eighteen months, and no salary band prices that.

When embedding beats hiring, and when it plainly does not

Hire full-time when the work is permanent, when it is your product rather than your back office, and when you have somebody senior who can direct an engineer. A payroll line is cheaper than any engagement over three years, and the knowledge stays in the building. That is the right answer more often than a consultancy will admit.

Embed when the work must start before the search finishes, when the first task is deciding what to build, or when a permanent post would be idle by month seven. specshop.dev is an AI consultancy and AI agency in Colombo, Sri Lanka, led by Janaka Ediriweera, Principal AI and Product Management Consultant. Our embedded engagement is a fixed price and never an hourly rate: US$15,000 for three months, US$24,000 for six, US$36,000 for twelve, which is LKR 4.93m, LKR 7.89m and LKR 11.84m at the rate above. The engineer joins on day one and spends the first fortnight mapping rather than coding, which is what it costs to hire a builder.

Do not embed if what you want is a cheaper permanent employee. You will pay more per month and be annoyed by month four. The test is whether the engagement has an end state you can describe in a sentence. If not, you are describing a job, and you should advertise it.

For the engineers reading this

You are here for the number, not the hiring maths, so here is how we work. We do not run a bench and we do not bill by the hour, so we cannot offer the volume of interchangeable work a body shop can. What we offer is spec-first delivery: the specification is written before the code, acceptance criteria are argued about in week one, and nobody is handed a ticket saying make it work with AI. The terms sit on the page where clients hire AI engineers in Sri Lanka.

The career advice inside the numbers above is simple. The gap between LKR 185,000 and LKR 500,000 a month is not a gap in model knowledge. It is a gap in having owned something in production, with your name on it, that others depended on. We wrote about why the last step of that climb is a cliff rather than a slope in Four of the Five Steps Are Gradual. One Is a Cliff.

What to do this week

Write down the actual job: not the title, but the three outcomes you want in ninety days, because a description that cannot name them is why the last search took six months. Price both routes on one sheet, your own base times 1.15 for EPF and ETF plus your own recruitment and ramp-up figures, against a fixed engagement price for the same period. Then ask whether the work still exists at that volume in month seven.

If it does, advertise the post and pay at the top of the band, because the middle of the band is where six-month searches happen. If it does not, buy the mapping before you buy anybody. Our workflow mapping sprint is US$2,300, about LKR 756,125, for two video sessions, your three busiest workflows, staff hours against each and a written report in 48 hours, credited in full against the recruitment fee if you hire within 30 days. The first thirty-minute call is free, and the honest answer to it is sometimes that you should hire, and not from us.

Questions people actually ask.

What is the average AI engineer salary in Sri Lanka?

There is no reliable single average, because PayScale’s Sri Lankan machine learning engineer page rests on just 11 reported profiles and its data scientist page on 34, both too thin to publish as a band. The defensible figures are PayScale’s senior software engineer average of LKR 2,218,378 a year from 113 profiles as at 20 May 2026, about LKR 184,865 a month, and the LKR 400,000 to 600,000 a month that senior AI roles in Colombo advertise at on the job boards.

How much does a freelance AI engineer cost in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lankan AI and machine learning freelancers advertise at roughly US$15 to US$40 an hour, about LKR 4,930 to LKR 13,150 at the Central Bank rate of 328.75 on 10 September 2026. We could not verify a platform-wide band from a primary page, because the large freelance platforms publish no Sri Lanka rate page we could open and check, and the one Sri Lankan machine learning profile we could read on Freelancer.com listed US$25 an hour.

Is it cheaper to hire an AI engineer in Sri Lanka than in Dubai?

Yes, by roughly two to three times on base salary. PayScale puts a machine learning engineer in the United Arab Emirates at AED 148,304 a year from 20 profiles as at 11 May 2026, which is about AED 12,359 a month, or US$3,365 at the dirham’s peg of 3.6725 to the dollar implied by the IMF’s SDR rates for 9 September 2026, against an advertised Colombo senior band of US$1,217 to US$1,825 a month.

How long does it take to hire an AI engineer in Colombo?

No Sri Lankan recruiter or industry body publishes a verified time-to-hire figure for this role, so anyone quoting you one is estimating. What the job boards show is that senior AI engineer listings stay open while internships and junior posts turn over, and that on 10 September 2026 only five of ITPro.lk’s 50 live listings were AI, machine learning or data roles at all.

What is an embedded AI engineer?

An embedded AI engineer is a senior engineer who joins your team for a fixed period at a fixed price rather than an hourly rate, works inside your tools and standups, and spends the first fortnight mapping your workflows before writing production code. At specshop.dev the price is US$15,000 for three months, US$24,000 for six and US$36,000 for twelve, about LKR 4.93m, LKR 7.89m and LKR 11.84m, and what you keep at the end is the code, the specifications behind it and a team that can maintain both.
